It seems more and more people are attempting to take a break from Facebook, but Paul Baier is going to pay his daughter Rachel $200 if she stays off it for five months, Yahooreports.
The 14-year-old girl from Wellesley, Mass., made the deal with her father on Monday, signing a contract.
Essentially, Rachel has to make sure she stays off of Facebook until mid-April, when she will receive her first installment of $50, and then she’ll get the final amount of $150 on the last day of school.
She relinquished her password to her father so she could not reactivate the account without his permission and in the “contract” Rachel says she’ll be using the money for “stuff.”
Yahoo spoke with Baier, who said surprisingly the idea came from his daughter.
"She mostly wanted and needed the money as she has been frustrated by not finding babysitting jobs. She is an honors student but she says Facebook can be distracting."
Her first request was for $70, but she then decided that she wanted to renegotiate for $200.
"When she realized it would be for five months and she wanted an amount that would really excite her," Baier explained.
He’s hoping that their contract will inspire a trend:
"I've realized that she is part of generation of kids that has grown up on Facebook. She's been on it for two years full time. This is two years of 24/7 teen discussion of friends, clothes, parties, etc. They can't get away from it. I'm proud she recognized the benefit of a hiatus. She plans to go on using it after the contract end."
The Facebook Deactivation Agreement reads:
“I Rachel Baier agree to deactivate my Facebook Account from 2/4/13 to 6/26/13.”
“In return, my dad, Paul Baier, agrees to pay me $50 on 4/15/13 and $150 on 6/26/13. He/she will have access to my Facebook to change the password and to deactivate the account. This will prevent me from re-activating the account in the future. I plan to use the money for the following purposes: stuff.”
